Our Daily Bread

Give us today our daily bread. – Matthew 6:11 (NRSVUE)

When in Matthew 4:4, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3 saying, “People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God”, He was letting His listeners then and us today know that physical bread is not enough to sustain us, that what we require more is the spiritual bread which imparts and sustains life in the Spirit.

We see clearly that spiritual bread relates to the Word of God – both written (logos) and spoken (rhema). God’s logos is the Living Word or Jesus, as evidenced in John 1:1,14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (NIV)

Every day we need Jesus, our daily Bread, whom God has provided for us free of charge as the work of Calvary has freed us from toiling for bread. Our daily Bread is a gift and like the manna which fell from heaven to feed the sojourning Israelites (see Exodus 16), is to be received and not worked for.

Jesus spoke of heavenly manna in John 6:32-59 but the people, only envisioning physical food, could not grasp the concept of Jesus being our daily Bread and they walked away. Will you do the same? Will you walk away when Jesus challenges your way of thinking or your own beliefs or takes you out of your comfort zone? Will you go in search of that which makes you feel comfortable?

Beloved, it takes a great hunger for our daily Bread to overcome our physical wants. We need both physical and spiritual food, malnutrition will be the result if either is lacking but we must fill ourselves with more of the spiritual, as Jesus assures us,

Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and eat with you, and you with me. – Revelation 3:20 (NRSVUE)

Today and every day we must open the door to our daily Bread and not only eat with Him but feed on Him (see John 6:57).

Amen
